Got a remembering day barbecue coming up? Charcoal broiling food outdoors is a great approach to jubilate holidays or just celebrate admirable weather and amazing food.

Nowadays, people have gradually taken the health into consideration, especially, eating. Instead of using the convenient tools, they start finding the natural models.

That’s why the grillers prioritize to choose to utilize hardwood lump charcoal to replace briquettes. Apart from burning hotter, the lump charcoal is safer because it contains less carbon and ash.

Furthermore, the chemicals in lump charcoal are natural. The product does not also involve the additives, so it makes sure that your foods will be healthiest and cleanest.

On the other hand, once you choose to use lump charcoal, controlling the heat will become easier because it provides a reasonable amount of oxygen.

It’s a bit surprising to me that many people don’t know about the fantastic product. We often buy ones from familiar brands such as Big Green Egg, Royal Oak, Original, and avoid trying new things.

In my opinion, Jealous Devil is breaking all records of best lump charcoal and gaining the champion. There are many things I want to praise about the product, and just a little bit complaining.

Refer as the “wicked good” charcoal, the Jealous Devil lump charcoal is an excellent product for smoking and grilling that comes in restaurant quality, meaning you can create amazing food from the comfort of your own home.

Its premium ingredients make it burn with less smoke, sparks, and produce less ash for easier clean up than your regular charcoal.

Another thing we liked about Jealous Devil is that they care about the environment and use sustainable wood for making their lump charcoal. Despite their growing demand, they have never cut a tree just to produce charcoal. We like this product and would recommend it as the best lump charcoal for smoking and grilling.

Pros
  • Best Shape And Size: the chunks are not too small or too big so you can fit them into many ovens. Some cheap brands often stuff the bag with vast pieces of lump charcoal then fill the space with tiny, useless bits. You will never see such situation in Jealous Devil.
  • No Additives: The lump charcoal is made 100% from natural ingredients. There are no strange-smelling chemicals added to the product. That’s what the manufacturer says, and when I lighten it up, there is no unpleasant odor of chemicals, so I think they are honest.
  • Easy To Catch Fire: It took me no time to get accustomed to the lump charcoal. I poured some cooking oil on it, and maneuver with a lighter and a few pieces of paper. That’s it, one minute and we’re done. In the past, some product had made me hover over the oven more than 20 minutes with no result.
  • Long-time Burning: The manufacturer has claimed that Jealous Devil burns twice as hot and three times as long as traditional others because there is 7000 cal/g of cooking power. Not quite right, anyway, but I do find the product lasts much longer and gives out incredible heat.
  • Restaurant Quality: which means no smoke, no sparks, little ash, and simple cleanup after cooking. It also boosts the flavor of your dishes by adding some mild, natural smoky aroma to the taste.
Cons
  • Not so smoky: If you are a fan of extreme smoky things, Jealous Devil may not meet your expectation.
  • Limited supplying: Sometimes we fail to get a bag of Jealous Devil for our BBQ. I don’t know why, but Oak Royal and Fogo seem more accessible.

  • Fogo Super Premium Hardwood Lump Charcoal in 35 lb Bag

The Fogo FHWC35LB is a premium hardwood lump charcoal and also the best lump charcoal for Big Green Egg or Kamado Joe grilling cookware. This product is 100% natural lump charcoal and has no other chemicals or additives. So, you’re insured with a clean and natural burning fire that will make your food taste even better.

Click the photo to see the Price on AmazonThis lump charcoal is made from dense Central American Oak Hardwood trimmings with hand selected pieces placed in the bag. This makes sure that you get the top quality lump charcoal pieces you can use for cooking, although some users say that they find the pieces a little too big. However, you can try to cut to your desired size if needed to.

Fogo lump charcoal lights fast and can be ready to grill within 15 minutes. Lighting it up is easy without the need to use lighter fluid. Simply build a pile of lump charcoal and place a vegetable oil-soaked ball of kitchen paper towel underneath. Since it is dense and easy to light, it can burn hotter and longer than any regular charcoal.

All in all, those who want to enjoy a grilled dish with a natural flavor, the Fogo lump charcoal can be one of the shopping selection. The product does not come with the toxic components, so it is healthy.

Pros
  • Long-time Burning: That’s the most beneficial feature I want to point out about Fogo Hardwood Lump Charcoal. In fact, I see it lasts longer than Jealous Devil, so it’s the most suitable choice for stewing or slow cooking.
  • Easy To Lighten Up: Not so easy as Jealous Devil, but not bad at all. Don’t forget to add some oil or gas, or else the lump charcoal cannot catch fire.
  • Pretty Big Chunks: I see they are of fist-sized, and the shape and size are relatively stable.
  • No Ash Left: Big phew for the arduous cleanup. A great favor for us grilling freaks.
Cons
  • There Are Still Tiny Pieces: You won’t see them at first, but when there is only 1/3 of the bag left, the useless bits will appear.
  • Too Big… Maybe?: Due to the huge size of the chunks, perhaps it’s not a so wise choice for quick grilling. In the case, you should try to break them down into smaller pieces.

Cons

No chemical additives or fillers make for a cleaner burning fuel and less ash, with the benefit of natural grilling flavor.

The most meritorious thing about Bayou Classic lump charcoal is that the price is compatible with the quality. It’s not the cheapest thing you can find in the market, but the comparing to the quality, it is impressive. With the same good features, Royal Oak is more expensive owing to golden brand name. If you a starter who doesn’t want to risk too much money, Bayou Classic is a suitable choice.

Pros
  • Low-price With High Quality: Only under $20 for 20lbs full of good features.
  • Consistent Burning: I should say the feature is the same as that of Original, but with a much lower price.
  • Not So Consistent Shape and Size, But Little Useless Pieces: The chunks aren’t of the same quantity, but there is only a little dust that you can’t use.
Cons
  • Limited Burning Time: Looking for a long-lasting product? You may consider another. The burning time is not so impressive, or I should say considerably short. Keep an eye on the oven and add more lump charcoal for stewing or slow grilling.

The name Royal Oak tell all about the quality of this product. 100% natural wood, mostly oak, is used to make the ultimate product. Therefore, not only the burning is consistent, the heat given out is impressive, but the smoky aroma is very natural as well.

Lump in general burns a lot cleaner than briquets – no filliers. However the results can be inconsistant, primarily due to how well of a job you do in packing it into your charcoal basket. Due to it’s irregular shape if you just dump it in you end up with a lot of big air pockets in the pile, this in turn allows it to burn hotter, and if you don’t have a pit that seals very well you can end up being unable to keep the temps down – and you go through your fuel faster. If you can take the time to layer it in by hand and adjust the pieces for a tighter pack you will get good results.

Pros
  • 100% Natural Material, Mostly Oak: Cheap brands often mix other kinds of wood into the lump charcoal to reduce to producing cost. Royal Oak just doesn’t. You can rest assured about the material quality of the brand.
  • No Additives: It means no strange chemical smells, no compromised taste of the dishes, and so invisible risks. We are completely safe with Royal Oak.
  • Easy To Catch Fire: If I had to give a mark to the feature, it would be 7/10. It’s good, not so good, but good enough to give a thumbs-up.
  • No Ash Left: Big bravo from house-wives.
Cons
  • Inconsistent Sizes: Sadly, there are still a few so small pieces that we can’t use.
  • Low-quality Products In The Market: Imported ones, which aren’t made in the USA, often have a short time to burn, leave ash, and give out a little chemical odor while cooking.

Best Lump Charcoal Buyer’s Guide

Best Lump Charcoal – Choosing the Right Charcoal for Grilling and Smoking

How to Light Lump Charcoal: 3 Super Easy Ways – Lovely Flavor

Best Lump Charcoal – Choosing the Right Charcoal for Grilling and SmokingNow I’m going to do is give a little test on the Best of the West 100% Mesquite Lump Charcoal. What we have here today is, we have the 6.6 pound bag. I figure this is going to be good for about two barbecues. You can get it in larger sizes, all the way up to 40 pound bags.

Now what’s great about this charcoal is you can see it comes in these big lumps like this, and that makes it easy to work with versus the small little briquettes that you normally find in a bag of briquettes. The charcoal itself is pure. That’s because it’s manufactured directly from the Mesquite tree, versus the briquette, which you can see is infused with the little bits of sawdust from the Mesquite. So, for sure, you’re getting 100% of the flavor, 100% of the taste, when you buy the lump charcoal.

There are two good ways to start your lump charcoal, and one bad way to do it. Remember, you have 100% natural charcoal, so why would you use this stuff? This is lighter fluid. I don’t care what it says, if it’s odorless, it’s a chemical. You don’t want to put it on your lump charcoal.

Best Lump Charcoal – Choosing the Right Charcoal for Grilling and SmokingThe next thing we have is a Chiminea, or a chimney. These are a great way to start your charcoal. You put some newspaper underneath, throw it on top, light it. It’s a very natural and clean way to start the charcoal. Third way is to use the Turboflame. This is also a product from Best of the West. What it is, it’s like a little torch. On the end of it, kind of like an extended lighter, and we’ll se how to do that. This is a pretty good product and it’s very safe to use.

So to use a chimney, it’s very very simple. First, you go out and you get the newspaper that you hate the most. You crumple up a bunch of pages of it, stick them up underneath here. Don’t overfill it. It’s important. Otherwise, it won’t get any air into it. Next, open up your bag of Best of the West, and pour some in there. It’ll probably take about half the bag, maybe a quarter of the bag or so. We got a piece that’s too large to fit into our chimney. So, how do you handle that? All you have to do is take a hammer … You can break it in half, stick it into your chimney, fits just fine. It’ll light up no problem at all.

Best Lump Charcoal – Choosing the Right Charcoal for Grilling and SmokingSo once you have your charcoal in the top, and you have your newspaper in the bottom, stick your little torch in there. Go ahead and light that newspaper. Maybe you can light it on the other side too, make sure it gets going. Be no problem at all, in about 15 or 20 minutes you’ll have a nicely burned down piece of charcoal that you can use to cook with.

As the flames take over the charcoal, you’re going to find that you’re going to get some sparking, and you’re going to hear some popping. What that is, is air pockets that are in the charcoal that were created during the manufacturing process. Not to worry, that’s common in all lump charcoals. Just make sure you wait for your charcoal to burn down before you put your food on top, so you don’t have any of the charcoal popping onto your food.

So we got the chimney going, and that worked out really well to get the charcoal going in a natural manner, but now let’s use the Turboflame product. Again, this is kind of like an extended lighter or a small torch, to get your charcoal going. The first thing you need to do, of course, take your charcoal and pour it into your grill. What I want you to do is kind of make a mound out of it, that way it can get some air inside. Get your Turboflame product and your lighter, extend your lighter past the nozzle of the Turboflame, get it on, and away you go.

So, as the flame gets going it’s going to spark again, just like it did on the other stuff. This time it’s a little more accelerated though. Stand back from the flame. Get it going. The great thing about Turboflame is you can get about maybe, I don’t know, 10 or 15 starts out of it before the can runs dry. So, it’s been about 15 minutes or so and it looks like our charcoal is burned down pretty good. It’s nice and gray around the edges, and very hot.

Best Lump Charcoal – Choosing the Right Charcoal for Grilling and SmokingSo now it’s time to transfer the coals from the chimney down into your pit. What I like to do, and this is very good for safety, is to use a towel or a barbecue mitt to pick up your chimney. Take it down, pour it into the bottom of your grill or your pit, or whatever it is you have. Maybe it’s your Weber. Next, I like to spread it out a little bit. So, I’m cooking for a lot of people tonight, so I’m going to add some more charcoal to it. You have to remember, when you do add more charcoal to it, that it is going to keep sparking. So, you got to wait for that to finish before you start cooking on it.

So there you have it. I’ve showed you quick, easy ways to start your charcoal. This is a great Lump Charcoal. 100% Mesquite. I think you’ll like it, and the flavor is great. We love it, we use it all the time.

A little word on disposal, remember this stuff burns a lot hotter and a lot longer than you’re used to, so give it some time to cool down before you try to dispose of it. Because it is a 100% natural product, you can add the ashes to your soil amendment and put it right back into your garden. It’s great nutrients.

Advantages of Lump Charcoal

It burns hotter

One of the most obvious benefits to using lump charcoal is its ability to heat up quickly and burn at a much higher temperature than traditional charcoal briquettes will. In a usual situation you can get a cooking temperatures up as high as 800 to 1000 degrees Fahrenheit with traditional briquettes, while temperatures as high as 1400 degrees can be achieved with lump charcoal. For the seasoned pro this can be a big benefit for several different cooking scenarios. Lump charcoal burns significantly hotter than briquettes in the barbecue grill because of the purity of the carbon. This is a useful aspect when you are searing your meat on the cooking equipment. The process will also be faster when air is flowing efficiently, so you can prepare more food within a shorter period of time. If you have a small grill with limited space for residue ash, it is more prudent to choose the lump type. The consumption of the material is more thorough and leaves little ash.

For those times that you are cooking steaks or other meats where you want to get a very nice searing effect while still maintain more of a juicy center, these higher temperatures are the best scenario. The higher temperature allows for the moisture and flavors to be locked in as the outside sears perfectly.

It burns cleaner

Because there are no additives whatsoever put into the mix, meals cooked with lump charcoal have no bitter or sour taste that can be left in food cooked with traditional briquettes. This also makes it a very ideal product to use for smoking or long grilling situations where exposure over the smoke is prolonged. Made from natural hickory, oak or other types of American hardwood, lump charcoal, which is also known as chunk charcoal, is charcoal, only much better. Ramping up the quality of your fire to new heights, this king of all charcoals is completely natural – there are no bits of building rubble or broken pieces of disused furniture here – and the result is a light-weight, fairly large and shiny piece of carbon that burns cleaner.

It burns quicker

When using lump charcoal, getting the grill ready cook with has never been faster. With only a match and some concentrated air flow, or the use of a charcoal chimney on the grill, you can easily get the grill ready to cook in as little as 15 minutes. Nobody likes to wait around for the meal, so this makes it ideal to use especially for gatherings or meals where timing is important.

It burns longer

Another benefit that novices and pros alike enjoy is that lump charcoal will burn for longer periods of time, so it makes it an ideal choice for slow cooking. The key having success with lump charcoal is controlling the heat and temperature. This can easily be down by restricting airflow into the coals.

A great all around product

Most grillers agree whether they are new to grilling, or they have been doing so for years, that in most situations lump charcoal is the superior choice. It is perfect for obtaining meats with moist centers and perfectly seared outsides, and it can produce a very consistent result for slow cooking/smoking recipes, and best of all it gives the perfect wood fire smoke flavor that is natural and clean.

On the other hand, lump charcoal is not completely without drawbacks. The cost of this type of product is slightly higher compared to briquettes. This aspect can be a limiting factor in some situations. However, the quality of the grilling results achieved can overshadow the pertinent cost difference.

How to store lump charcoal

The most important part about storing your lump charcoal is to keep it dry. That means storing it away from excess moisture. However, if your charcoal does get wet, all is not doom and gloom. You can lay it out in the sun in a single layer, allowing it to dry out. It should be fine to use once all of the moisture has evaporated.

A good suggestion is keeping your leftover lump charcoal in a sealed container. This will keep any moisture in the air from getting to it. The biggest benefit to storing your lump charcoal like this is that it will keep it from getting moldy. Once lump charcoal gets moldy, it can negatively affect the taste of your food, so you’d have to get rid of it. Considering the cost of good, high-quality lump charcoal, this would definitely not be in your best interest.

Wrapping Up

Using lump charcoal for grilling will definitely make your food tastier, healthier, and safer to eat. Based on our research and reviews, they are better than using briquettes despite being more expensive because they are earth-friendly, easier to light, cleaner, and longer lasting.
