Out of the Box
Although I find this grill to be relatively light enough to be portable, other customers feel it being pretty heavy for its size. The Charcoal Grill, on its own, weighs about 27 pounds, the shipping weight is between 31.1 and 33 pounds, and this product will be shipped in a box separate from any other Amazon products you may have purchased with it to help prevent damage to any products sent.
Once you remove the grill from the box, you can start using it right away. This is because the grill has already been seasoned. Also, you don’t need any special tools to put complex parts together, because the grill is ready out of the box. This grill does not come with its own cover, but it does come with must-read instructions on how to maintain this grill.
This cast-iron grill is built to last, and many have said that this grill lasted much longer than other grills they had used in the past. In order for the grill to last, though, the user must clean it in a specific way, and re-season it. This might be considered too time-consuming, and some consumers ended up with their Charcoal Grills getting rusted one month after their first use of it, precisely because they didn’t clean and season it properly. Users who did follow the instructions found that the maintenance process was worth it, however, as they have shown that they could grill a variety of consumables while having enough space on this grill to serve all of their guests. The top of the grill is flat, with no lip, allowing you to use certain-sized pots and skillets with it. The slits between the grates are so small and narrow that you wouldn’t have to worry about the food falling through into the hot coals. The Sportsman’s Grill heats up evenly completely, except for the logo in the center of the grates. One customer has protested that the area with the logo doesn’t heat up as well as the rest, having to cut a whole steak in half in order to cook each piece smoothly in their entirety. Besides this, though, the rest of the grill heats up in unison and can stay warm a while after its use. Now, this particular detail can either be dubbed good or bad, depending on the customer. There are those who don’t like it because they have to wait a while for the grill to cool down in order to clean it. This adds more time and inconvenience for the owner. Different customers, on the other hand, like the grill to keep any extra food warm for anyone who wants seconds or any guests arriving late to the party.
Note: for a consistent grilling experience, and due to the L410’s size, consider Japanese charcoal for consistently-sized briquettes:
Lodge's Pre-Seasoned Sportsman's Charcoal Grill may very well be a grill that stays with you, as this grill can last for many years. There are some minor inconveniences, such as the logo in the center of the grates and the longevity of the grill relying entirely on its high maintenance. This grill, however, has much more, bigger benefits, that outweigh the smaller negatives, and is definitely worth the purchase.
